Overview of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs
The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs seeks to build our nation’s human capital through the development of athletic talent, physical education, and youth empowerment across Trinidad and Tobago. The Ministry focuses on maximizing the potential of young people and athletes while strengthening national identity, wellness, and pride through sport and youth development.
The mission of the Division of Physical Education and Sport is to enrich lives through total participation, quality training, and excellence in sport.
The two pillars of the National Sport Policy – Total Participation Sport (TPS) and High Performance Sport (HPS) – drive this mission forward.
Key Objectives:
To increase participation in sport and physical recreation at all levels
To raise standards of athletic performance
To increase the quality and quantity of sporting facilities
To provide information for and about physical recreation and sport
To promote sport as an industry
To implement a national sport policy
To promote drug-free sport
To advocate for quality physical education and sport in schools
To encourage national sporting organizations to develop strategic approaches and become self-sufficient
The Ministry’s work is supported by key state entities such as the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SporTT), which facilitates facility development and athlete support nationwide.
In addition to its focus on sport, the Ministry also drives youth development programmes designed to nurture leadership, innovation, and life skills among young people — preparing them to contribute meaningfully to national progress through education, community involvement, and entrepreneurship.
